SHILLONG/TURA, March 13: Police on Friday registered a suo motu case against a police personnel attached to the East Garo Hills District Executive Force (DEF) for allegedly keeping live ammunition inside the Williamnagar mosque instead of depositing it in the armoury during his leave period.
East Garo Hills SP, S.A. Rynjah informed that the case has been registered under the Indian Arms Act, 1959, after ammunition and police belongings were found at a rented accommodation within the premises of the Williamnagar mosque.
Rynjah said that on the morning of March 13, a group of people informed police that camouflage dresses and live ammunition were discovered inside the mosque compound.
“Upon inquiry, it was learnt that a police personnel of East Garo Hills DEF had been residing in a rented accommodation within the mosque compound. The personnel, who is currently on leave, had left behind his personal belongings including police uniforms with nameplate, belt, boots, camouflage uniforms and an ammunition pouch,” the SP said.
During the inspection, police recovered four live rounds of ammunition from the belongings. Rynjah said that keeping ammunition at a private location during leave instead of depositing it in the armoury is unauthorised. The recovered items were subsequently seized and a case was registered at Williamnagar Police Station under Section 25(1-A) of the Arms Act.
The police also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading false or misleading information on social media regarding the incident, warning that such acts would attract legal action.
