SHILLONG, March 14: The situation in West Garo Hills district remained by and large peaceful in the last 24 hours, barring a few stray incidents reported from the plains belt areas.
According to the district administration, curfew was relaxed on Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm to allow public movement and enable people to carry out regular activities.
However, as a preventive measure to restore peace and normalcy, the curfew has been further extended from 6 am of March 15 to 6 am of March 16, with a relaxation period from 6 am to 6 pm on March 15 to facilitate normal activities.
The administration said that except for an isolated incident reported from Batabari, which has reportedly been resolved, no untoward incidents were reported from any part of the district during the day.
Local communities have also continued efforts to promote peace, with a prayer service held for the third consecutive day at Parade Ground in Tura Bazar on Saturday evening.
The peace gathering, called the “Peace Crusade”, was earlier organised at Araimile Junction on the first day and at Hawakhana Junction on the second day.
Saturday’s programme was hosted by Balading Church, Babupara Church, Nikrang Ading Church and Akonggre Church, while the cleaning of the Parade Ground premises was carried out by the Puja Committee of Tura.
Security forces remain deployed at strategic locations across the district to ensure safety, while the district administration and police continue to keep constant vigil and monitor the situation.
