SHILLONG, March 18: C&RD Minister and local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun has directed officials to carry out an immediate and comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by a violent windstorm and heavy rainfall in Jirang.
Chairing a high-level meeting with the Block Development Officers (BDOs) of Umling and Jirang, the C&RD minister instructed that the assessment focus on homes, schools and healthcare facilities, particularly in the worst-affected areas of Jirang Block.
It is pertinent to note that the extreme weather has damaged numerous structures, disrupted essential services and affected several households. Field officials have been deployed to document losses and prepare detailed reports.
Sohtun stated that the government is moving to ensure relief measures are rolled out without delay, with specific instructions to identify every affected household and public institution.
The administration is expected fast-track financial assistance for families whose homes were damaged. Priority has also been accorded to restoring critical infrastructure, including Public Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) and schools.
To ensure transparency, BDOs have been tasked with verifying beneficiaries so that aid reaches the most affected through the block-level administration.
The C&RD minister also urged local Dorbar Shnongs to remain alert and coordinate closely with authorities, stressing the need for preparedness in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather.
