GUWAHATI, March 19: Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Ashutosh Kumar has nominated Sharmila Bhuyan, presently serving as District Judge, Baksa, to preside over an exclusive fast-track sessions court for conducting day-to-day trial proceedings in the Zubeen Garg death case.
Thanking the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday termed the development as a significant milestone in the collective pursuit of justice in the Zubeen Garg murder case.
“This decisive step will greatly expedite the judicial process and reinforces our commitment to ensuring timely justice,” Sarma said.
“I express my deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court for accepting our request and for his unwavering support in strengthening the cause of justice,” he stated.
The Assam Cabinet had on February 27 approved the constitution of an exclusive and dedicated Sessions Court in accordance with the provisions of Section 346(1) BNSS, 2023, for day-to-day trial of the case relating to the death of legendary singer and state’s cultural icon, Zubeen Garg.
A Cabinet meeting, chaired by the chief minister, took the decision to constitute the fast track/exclusive court, considering the sensitivity of the matter and its potential implications for public order and governance credibility.
