EDUCATION SCAM CASE

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, March 23: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday said that the termination of tainted teachers in the alleged education scam still stands.
He said the criminal case against the officials and other higher-ups named in the scam has been quashed by the High Court.
Meanwhile, the Minister said that the state government will continue to initiate new ideas for the betterment of the Education department, subject to the availability of funds.
Stating that the process of rationalisation is going on, he said that some schools are willing to rationalise, while some are not. He clarified that this is a process of rationalisation and not the taking over of the schools.
On the other hand, the state government has relaxed the eligibility criteria for in-service teachers to appear in the TET examination, as they are now required to pass this examination as per a ruling of the Supreme Court.
Aristotle Rymbai, president of the Meghalaya SSA School Association, who met the Education Minister on Monday, said the government has already issued a notification for the relaxation of the eligibility criteria for in-service teachers.
Now, the in-service teachers will have to score 68 marks as qualifying marks instead of 90 out of 150 to clear the MTET. Rymbui said that 25,000 in-service teachers do not have TET qualifications.
The Supreme Court’s September 2025 ruling makes TET mandatory for in-service teachers within two years. The Meghalaya government, along with teacher bodies, has already filed a review petition on the matter.
