JOWAI, March 25: The District Tuberculosis Office, West Jaintia Hills, observed World Tuberculosis Day on Wednesday by declaring 12 villages TB-free and launching a new state-wide awareness campaign.
The event, held under the theme “Yes! We Can End TB,” featured a rally from Tpep Pale to the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong. During the programme, the villages of Kongwang, Ladjaplem, Larem Shyiap Nongtalang Shnongthymme, Pamtadong, Madan Tyrpait, Iongshiwait, Bhain, Khadkasla, Mookyndeng, Khliehumbuit, and Khliehsniriang were officially recognised for eliminating the disease.
District Medical & Health Officer Dr P Shylla highlighted that social stigma and lack of awareness remain the primary challenges in tackling tuberculosis. She urged the public to overcome fear and cooperate with health authorities to ensure total elimination. To further these efforts, a 100-day campaign titled “Taking Care of Everyone: TB Free Meghalaya” was launched to scale up detection and treatment.
The programme also honoured medical officers, treatment supporters, DOTS providers, and ASHA workers for their contributions. Nursing students from Dr Norman Tunnel Hospital were also recognised, and various competitions were held to mark the occasion.
