SHILLONG, March 25: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) on Wednesday inspected the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Pahamsyiem to assess its infrastructure and operational readiness.
The delegation was led by Committee Chairman and Nongstoin MLA Gabriel Wahlang, accompanied by former minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem.
During the visit, school authorities briefed the committee on several infrastructure gaps affecting the institution’s functioning. A primary concern was raised regarding the Girls’ Hostel, which currently lacks essential facilities.
Speaking to the media, Wahlang said the committee’s findings would be compiled into a report for the state government to ensure necessary intervention.
The Pahamsyiem EMRS is the first fully functional institution of its kind in the state, having started its academic session in December 2025. A second school at Samanda in East Garo Hills became operational in early 2026.
Under a Ministry of Tribal Affairs initiative, the state government has a roadmap to establish 38 EMRS institutions across Meghalaya. With a sanctioned investment of Rs 1,400 crore, the project aims to provide quality residential schooling for Scheduled Tribe students in every eligible block.
