SHILLONG, March 27: The Meghalaya government plans to construct around 680 new school buildings across the state, with each school expected to receive approximately Rs 70 lakh under the upcoming Mission Education Phase IV.
This major infrastructure push was announced on Thursday by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui during the inauguration of the newly constructed building at Darang LP School in Shillong, a project completed under Phase III of the mission.
According to a statement here, the programme was well-attended by local stakeholders, including the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO), the Officer-in-Charge of Dawki Police Station, the school’s Headmaster and teachers, as well as traditional heads such as the Dalloi and Headman of Darang and neighbouring villages.
Addressing the gathering, Rymbui outlined the initiatives undertaken since 2018 to improve the sector. He noted that discussions with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma led to the identification of four key pillars for rebuilding education—infrastructure, teachers, policy and students—which continue to guide their reforms today.
As part of the upcoming Phase IV expansion, the education minister added that the Amlarem constituency is likely to benefit from eight to 11 new school buildings, significantly enhancing educational facilities in the area. Rymbui said that under the leadership of the chief minister, crores have been invested to secure the sector for future generations.
He also drew attention to policy measures introduced to improve the welfare and motivation of educators, such as a pay scale policy for Ad hoc and SSA teachers.
To further promote digital learning, the education minister handed over a computer classroom and related facilities funded under SRWP 2025–2026 during the event.
The programme featured remarks from the school headmaster, who detailed the history and development of the institution, and the SDSEO, who spoke on the importance of academic growth in the area.
