Meghalaya’s Verem clinches national bronze

Shillong, March 27: Meghalaya scripted a landmark moment in swimming as Verem Gedaliah Nongsiej clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 50m freestyle event at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh on Friday.
The achievement marks a historic first for the state in national-level swimming, with Verem becoming Meghalaya’s maiden medallist in the sport on such a stage. She is part of an eight-member contingent representing the state, selected by the Meghalaya Swimming Association for the Games.
Trained under high-performance coach Laitonjam Santosh, Verem delivered an impressive performance in the sprint event to secure a place on the podium, underlining the growing standards of swimming in the state.
Officials of the Meghalaya Swimming Association expressed pride in her accomplishment, terming it a significant breakthrough and expressing hope that the young swimmer will continue to scale greater heights in the future.
