SHILLONG, March 29: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has condemned the recently introduced amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in the Lok Sabha, describing it as “deeply dangerous” for civil society and democratic functioning.
In a statement, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Joplyn Scott Shylla said the amendment poses a serious threat to non-governmental organisations and grassroots movements that play a vital role in upholding democracy, human rights and social justice.
“This amendment is a direct attack on NGOs and civil society groups. By tightening restrictions on foreign funding, the government is attempting to silence dissent, weaken independent voices and curtail organisations working for the welfare of marginalised communities,” she said.
Shylla stated that such measures reflect an increasing trend of centralisation of power and the suppression of accountability.
She also maintained that women-led organisations and grassroots initiatives, which often depend on external support, would be among the worst affected.
“Instead of strengthening democratic space, this amendment shrinks it and goes against the spirit of the Constitution,” Shylla asserted.
The Mahila Congress has urged the Centre to withdraw the amendment and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to ensure transparency without compromising fundamental freedoms.
