SHILLONG, March 29: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Sunday condemned the assault of a commercial vehicle driver at Umshyrpi and called for immediate legal action against the perpetrator.
NPP state working president Hamletson Dohling described the incident as “shocking” and stated that such lawlessness has no place in a civilised society.
He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the individual involved is brought to justice.
The condemnation follows a clarification by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Saturday, who stated that the person seen in a viral video assaulting and threatening the Sumo driver was a civilian and not a police personnel.
The SP confirmed that a suo motu case has been registered and legal action is being taken.
The incident has also drawn sharp criticism from the FKJGP.
FKJGP chief organising secretary Khrawkupar Nongsiej had termed the act one of intimidation and misuse of authority and asserted that threatening citizens with arrest or firearms is unacceptable under any circumstances.
