SHILLONG, March 29: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), one of Meghalaya’s most influential pressure groups, is poised for a significant leadership change. Several senior members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) are reportedly not seeking re-election in the upcoming election on May 9.
The poll will elect new office bearers for the 2026–2029 term and is expected to bring in a fresh generation of leaders. Top functionaries, who have served three consecutive terms, are inclined to step down.
Uncertainty remains over whether incumbent leaders — president Lambokstarwell Marngar, general secretary Donald V. Thabah, vice president Biangbor Paliar, and assistant general secretary Sonstar Nongkhlaw — will contest again. The quartet was first elected in 2017 and has guided the organisation through several key movements since then.
Election committee secretary Samuel Jyrwa announced that the XVI General Election will be held on May 9 from 8 am to 3 pm at Dinam Hall, Jaiaw.
“We urge all eligible members, especially from different units of the KSU, to come forward, participate actively and take responsibility in strengthening the organisation for the welfare of the jylla and the community,” Jyrwa said.
He outlined the election schedule: Nomination papers will be issued from April 4 to April 11 (11 am to 5 pm) at the KSU office in Jaiaw. Submissions will be accepted from April 6 to April 13 until 5 pm, with withdrawals on April 14. Scrutiny of nominations is set for April 15 at 1 pm.
Candidates must submit nominations to election committee chairman Danny M. Khyriem or secretary Samuel Jyrwa within the stipulated time. All KSU units, circles, and district units have been asked to submit names of 10 voters each to the KSU office by April 11.
Senior leaders, eminent citizens, teachers, and media personnel have been appointed as observers to ensure the election is conducted smoothly and fairly.
