GUWAHATI, March 30: With just a few days remaining for the Assembly elections, the administration of districts across Assam are taking people-centric initiatives to make the voter awareness campaign more engaging, particularly encouraging new-generation electors to exercise their voting rights.
Notably, various awareness programmes are being implemented across the state under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative, as per the directives of the Election Commission of India. The objective is to create awareness among voters.
The campaign covers all sections of society, including urban and rural areas.
The Tinsukia district administration organised a programme at Dihing Tea Garden in the Margherita constituency, where voter information slips were distributed. People were informed about polling stations, serial numbers, polling dates and timings, thereby motivating tea garden voters.
The Chirang district administration conducted interaction sessions with college-going new voters and carried out voter literacy campaigns. As a symbolic gesture of responsibility towards the future, tree plantation drives were also organised involving new voters.
The Nagaon district administration, in collaboration with the Inspector of Schools’ office conducted awareness programmes under the theme “Your Vote, Your Right—Do Not Waste It.” Banners, posters and slogans were widely used to enhance voter awareness.
Similarly, the Morigaon district administration has implemented diverse activities to engage the public. These include theatrical performances by popular actors, use of popular Bollywood dialogues, programmes titled “Democracy Market,” and news-style presentations—all of which have effectively attracted young voters.
Additionally, the districts are administering voter pledge ceremonies at water supply project sites which have emerged as a notable feature of the campaign.
The Sonitpur district administration continues its efforts through wall painting competitions and street plays to reach all sections of voters.
To further promote awareness, the districts have also unveiled unique mascots reflecting local themes such as nature, culture, and economy. Notable examples include ‘Shihuriya’ inspired by the river dolphin in Dhubri, ‘Deoraj’ based on migratory birds in Majuli, ‘Kamdhenu’ representing the dairy sector in Bajali, and ‘Pygmy’ inspired by the endangered pygmy hog in Baksa.
