GUWAHATI, March 30: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the Opposition Congress of “dragging” cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s name in its election campaigns for political gain, asserting that justice cannot be delivered by political leaders but only by courts.
On Sunday, All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge had campaigned for the party in Nowboicha constituency of Lakhimpur, unveiling five key guarantees for the Assam Assembly elections, including delivering justice to the late singer within 100 days.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sarma, while referring to the Congress’ claim of giving justice to the late singer within 100 days, questioned that when the matter is sub judice, how could a political party give justice.
“It is not possible to promise justice within 10 days, one month, or even 100 days, as claimed by the Congress. No government can interfere in judicial proceedings. But our job was limited to giving the chargesheet. It is our credit that none of the accused have till date got any bail in the case,” the chief minister said.
Further, Sarma pointed out that if the party could deliver justice so promptly, then why did it take several years for the Congress to give justice to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated.
“Justice delivery is a legal process and no party can pinpoint the period of justice delivery,” he said.
He further alleged that Congress leaders only visit places like Zubeen Kshetra during elections. “If they truly cared about Assam, they would have also visited the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra and Shaheed Smarak,” Sarma said.
