SHILLONG: The re-assembled budget session of the State Assembly starting from Friday is likely to be stormy one in the wake of the killing of a 35-year-old woman at Chokpot by GNLA militants and twin custodial deaths in Tura among others.

The NPP and UDP are poised to take up the worsening law and order situation during the session as according to them, there has not been any effective steps on the part of the Government to deal with the ongoing unrest in Garo Hills.

The session will conclude on July 16.

While NPP has already met the Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju seeking the intervention of Centre on the worsening law and order situation, the UDP has decided to write to the Prime Minister to dismiss the Congress-led Government.

UDP President and Leader of Opposition had made it clear that the State Government failed to contain law and order situation in Garo Hills and hence the Chief Minister should relinquish the post.

Besides law and order situation, the Opposition will also raise the issue of frequent power cuts, ways and means to address the issue of influx and the perennial traffic snarl.

The sudden ban on the rat hole mining and the subsequent sufferings of the people who are directly or indirectly associated with mining will also be taken up by the Opposition during the session. NPP spokesperson James Sangma recently said that the party would take up the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, especially custodial deaths as well as the spurt in killings by the militants. “We will also raise the issue of the worsening power scenario resulting in frequent load shedding”, James said. Other issued which are likely to figure in the Assembly session are corruption and poor delivery system.
