SHILLONG, April 1: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Wednesday said the police will move the District Magistrate to cancel the firearm licence of the individual accused in the March 27 road rage case.
Although the offence is punishable by less than three years of imprisonment, a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been issued to the accused. The individual has since appeared before the Investigating Officer and is cooperating with the probe.
The SP stated that while the accused claims he did not have the weapon at the time of the incident, the victim alleged that a licensed firearm was used to threaten him. In light of these allegations, the police are seeking the revocation of the licence. A charge sheet is expected to be filed shortly.
The case stems from an incident last Friday near Anjali Pump. The victim, Shanskhemborlang Laitmiet, reported that a dispute over vehicle alignment in heavy traffic escalated when the accused allegedly brandished a pistol and assaulted him.
Laitmiet claimed that despite his attempts to disengage, the accused continued the physical and verbal assault.
A video of the confrontation, recorded by a passenger in the victim’s vehicle, is currently being used as evidence.
The incident had earlier prompted the Hynñiewtrep Taxi Drivers and Owners Association to demand the immediate arrest of the accused and the cancellation of his arms licence.
