SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister and Laitumkhrah legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh has registered a protest against Assam Rifles after it was found that waste water discharge from DGAR headquarters was leaking into the nearby civil residents at Nongrimmaw.

Ampareen who recently undertook an inspection of the spot observed that the boundary walls of the Assam Rifles had cracked at several places through which the waste water was creeping directly into the nearby civil colony.

The matter has already been taken up with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma who has assured to take up the issue with the Assam Rifles authorities.

“This problem has been there since years but the Assam Rifles officials do not pay any heed to our concerns,” Ampareen said here on Saturday.

The legislator has also asked the DGAR to leave a space of at least two feet between the road and the boundary wall which is being constructed by the Assam Rifles. The two feet space would allow passage of small vehicles till the end of the colony, she added.

According to Ampareen, the Assam Rifles have got a huge plot of land in Laitkor with the help of the State Government, and they should respond by parting with two feet of space for the civilians residing in the area.

It may be recalled that recently fire engines could not enter the colony during a fire incident in which twelve houses were gutted.
