SHILLONG, April 2: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has stated that it does not view the decision of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as wrong in appointing a non-Khasi indigenous person as one of its legal counsels.
VPP chief and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M. Basaiawmoit said that the party received information that the EC had initially attempted to engage qualified indigenous local candidates, but they expressed their inability due to being preoccupied with work.
He stated that the Council could not appoint individuals solely on the basis of being Khasi, adding that the objective is to win cases of the Council rather than continue losing as has happened in the past.
He further stated that the intention is for the appointed individuals to serve as counsels and advocates for the EC’s decisions in courts of law.
