AI‑generated pro‑Iran memes target Trump amid war

TEHRAN, April 9: Pro-Iran groups have increasingly used artificial intelligence to produce English-language memes aimed at shaping the narrative of the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Analysts suggest these memes, often satirical and culturally attuned to American audiences, are likely produced with government support, allowing Iran to influence international perceptions despite limited resources. This digital campaign complements Iran’s broader strategy of exerting geopolitical pressure, including threats to the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a broader information and psychological warfare approach.
The AI-generated content portrays former US President Donald Trump as out of touch, highlighting MAGA base divisions, personal health speculation, and political missteps. Some memes adopt popular cultural styles, including animated “Lego”-style videos, depicting Iranian military figures confronting Trump, with references to controversial topics such as the Epstein files.
Analysts say the sophistication and internet access required for such content suggest official or semi-official cooperation. State media has amplified these messages, and accounts like Akhbar Enfejari openly claim to operate from within Iran to challenge Western media narratives and disrupt decades-long dominance in global information dissemination.
Experts note that the meme campaigns reflect decades of Iranian propaganda experience, giving creators a deep understanding of American politics and culture to maximize engagement and psychological impact.
Unlike Iran, the U.S. and Israel have not conducted comparable foreign-targeted campaigns; US efforts, such as Voice of America broadcasts and domestic meme circulation, are limited, while Israel has experimented with AI videos targeting Iranians.
The memes serve multiple purposes: demoralizing Western audiences, glorifying Iranian resistance, and influencing perceptions of the conflict’s outcomes. Following a ceasefire, pro-Iran accounts celebrated the perceived victory, claiming that Trump and the West had “surrendered.” Analysts say the campaign illustrates a new era of information warfare, where AI-driven memes are deployed strategically to project Iranian power, shape narratives, and exert psychological influence without direct military action.
