MAWKYRWAT, April 9: In an unprecedented move, the Acting Syiem of Hima Langrin, Bryllyenhenry Syiemiong, was removed from his post on Thursday morning, just hours before he was scheduled to conduct the annual auction of the Hima’s resources.
The auction for the 2026-27 term—covering markets, gates, and rivers—had been previously approved and mandated by the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in a letter dated March 27, 2026.
Syiemiong told media persons that despite the Hima giving wide publicity for the auction, he received a letter from the KHADC EC at 7 AM on Thursday informing him of his removal.
The Council has appointed Pynshngainlang Syiemiong as the new Acting Syiem in his place.
Bryllyenhenry Syiemiong stated that he, along with the Myntris, Lyngdohs, and members of the Executive Dorbar, was in shock. He questioned the timing of the decision, noting that the same EC had instructed him only last week to proceed with today’s proceedings.
“There seems to be something behind this move by the VPP-led EC,” Syiemiong said. He criticised the party, which has campaigned on a platform of “clean politics,” accusing it of misleading the public and destabilising traditional institutions.
Asserting that he and local leaders cannot accept the Council’s action, Syiemiong announced his intention to approach higher authorities to seek justice.
