DUBAI, April 10: Donald Trump has cast doubt on the effectiveness of a two-week ceasefire with Iran, citing Tehran’s continued restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The disruption of this key global oil route has raised concerns about the durability of the truce. At the same time, Kuwait accused Iran and its regional allies of launching drone attacks, though Iran’s Revolutionary Guard denied involvement.
Amid the tensions, Benjamin Netanyahu signaled a possible diplomatic opening by approving direct talks with Lebanon, expected to take place in Washington. However, the announcement followed intense Israeli airstrikes on Beirut that killed over 300 people, underscoring the fragile security situation.
Key uncertainties remain, including the fate of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran’s missile capabilities and regional influence. Talks between the US and Iran are set to begin in Islamabad, led by Vice President JD Vance.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem warned Lebanese officials against making concessions in negotiations, while expressing support for the group’s military efforts. Within Lebanon, public opinion is divided, with some citizens supporting talks to end the war and others distrusting Israel’s intentions.
Keir Starmer described the ceasefire as “fragile” and emphasized the need to restore free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Humanitarian conditions in Lebanon remain dire, with hundreds of thousands facing food insecurity and mass displacement.
Overall, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the ceasefire remains unstable, with significant political, military, and humanitarian challenges unresolved. (AP)
