TEL AVIV, April 12: An extensive Israeli military campaign in southern Lebanon has resulted in the near-total destruction of several border villages, according to a report published by The Guardian.
The report states that villages such as Taybeh, Naqoura and Deir Seryan have been largely wiped out during the offensive, with footage released by the Israeli military showing homes being demolished using explosives. The operations were reportedly carried out under the justification of targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.
According to The Guardian, Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the clearance of residential structures in these areas, reflecting tactics previously seen in Gaza where entire neighbourhoods were flattened.
However, rights groups and critics have raised serious concerns over the scale and nature of the destruction. Human Rights Watch described the actions as disproportionate and warned they may amount to “domicide” — the deliberate destruction of civilian homes to make areas uninhabitable.
The report further notes that Israel is seeking to establish a “security zone” extending up to the Litani River, with displaced residents unlikely to be allowed to return until Israeli border areas are considered secure.
For residents, the damage goes beyond material loss. Many displaced families told The Guardian that entire communities — along with their cultural and generational ties — have effectively been erased. (Agencies)
