SHILLONG, April 12: Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Dr Vijay Kumar, on Saturday stressed the state’s commitment to holistic village development through the strengthening of grassroots institutions and inclusive growth.
Speaking after inaugurating a recently constructed cemented road at Rangshken, Kumar highlighted the role of traditional bodies such as the Dorbar Shnong, Seng Longkmie, and Seng Kynthei. The road was built to facilitate the KJP Synod Sepngi annual meeting held in March.
“Meghalaya’s greatest strength lies in its traditional and social institutions.
The government is keen to further strengthen them as partners in development,” Kumar said. He noted that community-led initiatives play a crucial role in improving the quality of life in rural areas.
While describing the road project as small but significant, Kumar credited Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for providing financial support through various schemes to enable development at the grassroots level. He urged communities to actively participate in and take advantage of government programmes.
Director of Community and Rural Development, SC Sadhu, also attended the event and acknowledged the local community’s role in ensuring the timely completion of the project. The inauguration was held in the presence of church elders and members of the Dorbar Shnong Rangshken.
