SHILLONG: South Tura independent legislator John Leslee K Sangma has questioned the delay in the release of the Special Urban Works Programme (SUPW) funds for the year 2013-2014.

“Many of the Urban MLAs have to suffer due to the delay in the release of the funds. This has not been a good for the MLAs representing the urban areas,” Sangma said during the Question Hour in the Assembly on Monday.

According to him, the MLAs representing the rural constituencies are not facing this problem since the Community and Rural Development Minister Prestone Tynsong have taken the pain to see the funds under the Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP) are released in time.

He urged upon that Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to see that the funds under the scheme are released at the earliest.

In reply, Urban Affairs Minister informed that the main reason for the delay in release of the SUWP funds for year 2013-2014 is due to the model code of conduct.

She however informed that the actual amount sanctioned by the department during the year 2013-2014 for the development of urban areas in Garo Hills are Rs 151.36 crore (West Garo Hills), 1.84 crore (East Garo Hills). 1.18 crore (South Garo Hills) and Rs 1.38 crore (North Garo Hills).
