KHLIEHRIAT, April 16: Thieves decamped with approximately Rs 9,57,900 after breaking into an HDFC ATM at Wapungskur village in East Jaintia Hills in the early hours of Tuesday. CCTV footage captured two individuals at the scene around 2:24 am.
The culprits reportedly used a gas cylinder and specialised tools to cut open the machine, leaving the equipment behind before fleeing.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Rasgania confirmed the theft and stated that a crime scene investigation team, supported by sniffer dogs, was deployed to the spot.
Investigations revealed that the thieves reached the location in a Bolero pick-up that had been stolen from Dkhiah West on the evening of April 13. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Wapung village.
The owner of the Bolero, who had already filed an FIR regarding the vehicle’s disappearance, identified it at the site.
Police have moved the vehicle to the Ladrymbai Police Outpost for forensic examination. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing.
