SHILLONG, April 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday expressed confidence that Meghalaya will witness an increase in its representation in Parliament following the proposed delimitation of constituencies, while welcoming the Women’s Reservation Bill introduced in the Parliament on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters here, the Chief Minister indicated that there is an expectation of a rise in the number of MPs from Meghalaya, taking into account population and geographical factors.
He stated that the Government of India and the Delimitation Committee are expected to consider these aspects, although the final outcome will depend on the process.
On the Women’s Reservation Bill, he described the legislation as a long-pending measure that has now been addressed.
He acknowledged that the issue had remained unresolved for a considerable period and noted that the step taken by the central government was appropriate.
He further stated that the Bill is expected to address gaps in women’s representation in legislative bodies.
The Chief Minister conveyed that the state government supports the decision and would extend cooperation wherever required. He also urged political parties and organisations across sectors to support the move, stating that it is intended for the broader interest of both the state and the country.
Regarding the implementation of the Bill alongside the delimitation exercise, he indicated that both processes would need to be carried out in a coordinated and systematic manner.
