SHILLONG, April 17: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has clarified that it will not extend support to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), choosing instead to work through the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) for the upcoming by-election to the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
HSPDP president KP Pangiang stated that the party will sit with the RDA—an alliance that includes the United Democratic Party (UDP)—to deliberate on the strategy for the upcoming by-election.
He informed that the RDA recently met to discuss matters concerning the Shillong parliamentary constituency. However, no final decision has yet been taken on whether to field a candidate or extend support.
Pangiang added that while the party is not inclined to back the MDA, it is keen on strengthening unity among regional parties under the RDA banner to collectively decide the way forward for the election.
The by-election for the Shillong parliamentary seat was necessitated following the demise of Ricky AJ Syngkon earlier this year.
