London, April 18: On an afternoon that promised intensity but delivered tension in fragments, Brentford were left to rue a missed opportunity as they were held to a goalless draw by Fulham in a subdued west London derby.
Meanwhile, at St. James’ Park, AFC Bournemouth edged past Newcastle United 2-1 in a tightly contested encounter.
The result, flat in rhythm yet dramatic in its dying seconds, denied the Brentford a chance to break into the Premier League’s top six — at least for the time being.
For long stretches, the contest drifted. Passes were exchanged, spaces probed, but conviction remained elusive. And just when it seemed the game would fade quietly into the evening, it produced a moment of pure theatre.
Deep into stoppage time, Dango Ouattara rose to meet a decisive opportunity, his effort destined for the top corner, only for Bernd Leno to conjure a staunning save, tipping the ball over the bar with razor-sharp reflexes. It was instinct, brilliance, and timing rolled into one.
Moments later, the frustration compounded for Brentford. From the resulting corner, Nathan Collins found himself unmarked but headed wide, summing up a day where the margins refused to fall in their favour.
Leno, speaking after the match, reflected on the decisive intervention with quiet satisfaction. He admitted the uncertainty of the moment, unsure whether the ball had crossed the line, before being engulfed by teammates — a clear sign of its importance. Whether Fulham deserved the point might remain a matter of debate, but their goalkeeper had certainly earned it.
In truth, Fulham offered little going forward. Despite arriving on the back of three consecutive derby victories, Marco Silva’s side failed to register a single shot on target. Their best openings came and went without conviction — Ryan Sessegnon firing over in the first half, while Harry Wilson, known for late interventions, guided an effort wide when played through in the closing stages. Brentford, on the other hand, carved out the clearer chances but lacked the finishing touch.
Igor Thiago, still in pursuit of the Golden Boot and trailing Erling Haaland, headed wide early on when better was expected. Keane Lewis-Potter squandered a gilt-edged opportunity on the stroke of half-time, and later saw an effort deflected agonisingly.
The result marks a fifth consecutive draw for Brentford, a sequence that reflects consistency without cutting edge. They now sit level on points with Chelsea, but with rivals close behind and ready to capitalise, their grip on a potential European spot appears increasingly fragile.
Fulham, meanwhile, remain in a precarious mid-table position. With five games remaining, their ambitions of European qualification are fading, and injuries — including a first-half setback to Alex Iwobi — have only complicated their path forward. Elsewhere, Leeds United took a significant stride towards Premier League safety with a commanding win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. In a match defined by a blistering start, James Justin opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick before Noah Okafor doubled the advantage just 85 seconds later, finishing off a swift counterattack.
From there, Leeds controlled the narrative, if not always the tempo. While the intensity dipped in the second half, they held firm under sporadic pressure. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow produced a crucial save to deny Ladislav Krejci, and Rodrigo Gomes squandered a promising chance that might have shifted momentum. Ultimately, Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the result from the penalty spot in stoppage time, ensuring all three points.
At the other end of the spectrum, Wolves find themselves staring at relegation. Their eight-year stay in the top flight hangs by a thread, with results elsewhere now likely to determine their fate. (Agencies)
