GUWAHATI, April 21: The Assam BJP is gearing for a statewide agitation on Thursday against Congress’ alleged ‘anti-women’ stance, with party workers mobilising themselves at the district, mandal and booth levels.

To effectively implement the protest programme, “Mahila Akrosh”, the state BJP has entrusted special responsibilities to 26 leaders, including Member of Parliament from Guwahati, Bijuli Kalita Medhi, BTC Executive Member Rekharani Das Boro, former MP Queen Oja, and party general secretary Anup Barman.

Assam BJP president and MP from Darrang-Udalguri constituency, Dilip Saikia, has personally overseen the preparations by convening a crucial “meeting” with office bearers of the Guwahati Metropolitan District at the party headquarters.

Saikia called upon all women to unite against the alleged “anti-women” decisions of the Congress and has directed party workers to mount a strong and decisive resistance.

In an official statement issued from the state BJP headquarters here, party spokesperson Pranjal Kalita asserted that opposing every welfare-oriented initiative undertaken for the nation and its people has become an inherent culture of the Congress.

“By opposing the “Nari Shakti Bandhan (Amendment) Bill, 2026,” the Congress has not only stood against women’s empowerment but has also consistently taken positions contrary to national interest,” Kalita said.

“Previously, Congress had opposed landmark decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370, the CAA, construction of the Ram Mandir, abolition of triple talaq, eradication of naxalism, surgical strikes, air strikes and Operation Sindoor,” he said.

The party spokesperson further pointed out that at present, out of the 74 women Members of Parliament, 31 belong to the BJP, while Congress has merely 14 women MPs.

“Despite this stark contrast, Congress and its aligned leftist ecosystem have, instead of supporting reservation for women, resorted to politically motivated attacks against the BJP, often accompanied by derogatory and disrespectful remarks targeting women,” Kalita stated.

The BJP spokesperson reiterated that the party would continue to work relentlessly for the uplift of women and the protection of their rights.
