SHILLONG, April 21: Mawlai Sports Club (Mawlai SC) is set to make its debut in the I-League 3 2025–26 season, taking on Sikkim Brotherhood Football Club in their opening match at Khuman Lampak Stadium, Imphal on April 27
Addressing the media on Tuesday, club president Marcel Kharbani said the team qualified for the national tournament after winning the Meghalaya State League 2025–26, marking a historic first appearance for the club at this level.
Mawlai SC has been placed in Group A alongside FC Raengdai, Sikkim Brotherhood FC, Sunrise Club (Odisha) and ARA FC. The team will be coached by Hering Shangpliang.
Kharbani said the club has so far received limited financial support, with only a few individuals from Mawlai stepping in to help. He added that a proposal has been submitted to the state government seeking assistance, but no confirmation has been received yet.Coach Shangpliang said preparations have been challenging due to late confirmation of participation, which came only in March. “We have had limited time, but the team has worked hard to prepare,” he said, adding that Mawlai’s participation could open doors for other clubs from the state. He also noted that the squad is largely made up of local players, with only one external inclusion due to overlap with the ongoing Meghalaya State League.
Club secretary Mawkordor Nongsiej estimated the total cost of participation at around Rs 50–60 lakh. He said the club has approached its local MLA for support, who has assured assistance, though the amount is yet to be finalised.
Team captain Daman Bhalang Chyne said the team’s goal is to secure promotion to I-League 2, expressing confidence in their chances at the national stage. As Mawlai SC prepare to step onto the national stage for the first time, the focus remains firmly on making a strong impression despite the financial and logistical challenges. With a largely home-grown squad, belief in their abilities and a clear aim of securing promotion, the team will look to turn this opportunity into a defining chapter in the club’s journey.
