GUWAHATI, April 22: A fully-functional blood centre was inaugurated at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening transfusion medicine services in the Northeast region.
The facility was inaugurated by Prof. (Col) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, in the presence of the medical superintendent, deans, faculty members and staff.
A voluntary blood donation camp was organised to mark the inauguration, during which around 60 units of blood were collected.
The blood centre has facilities for collection of whole blood, separation of blood components and testing for transfusion-transmitted infections. It is equipped with automated systems for immunohematology testing, chemiluminescence-based testing and blood component processing to ensure safe and reliable services.
The centre also provides apheresis services, including single donor platelet collection and is open to the public for voluntary blood and platelet donation.
“The establishment of this comprehensive blood centre marks a major step forward in addressing the growing demand for safe and quality blood and blood components in the region. AIIMS Guwahati reiterates its commitment to promoting voluntary blood donation and delivering advanced, patient-centric healthcare services to the community and people of Northeast region,” an official statement said.
