TURA, April 23: After the statue of Jesus was vandalized by unidentified miscreants during the recent violence at Chibinang, a new one was formally re-installed in its place in the heart of Chibinang town.
In a significant act of communal harmony and public goodwill, members of the Muslim community, led by Mr. Hashanuz Zaman, repaired the damaged canopy and bore the full cost for the new statue of Jesus. The re-installation took place on Wednesday at the market complex owned by one, Mackenson Marak, where it originally stood.
The re-installation ceremony was attended by the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Dadenggre; the Block Development Officer (BDO), Demdema; a Meghalaya Police Service (MPS) officer; representatives of Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism; traditional leaders (nokmas); local NGOs; and members of the public.
The assembly unequivocally condemned the act of vandalism as unlawful and prejudicial to public order. It was collectively resolved to (i) uphold communal harmony and lawful conduct, (ii) remain vigilant against activities detrimental to peace and social cohesion, including illegal immigration and settlement, and (iii) promote inter-community cooperation and mutual assistance.
The re-installation reaffirms the rule of law and the shared commitment of all communities in Chibinang to peace, harmony, and civic responsibility.
