Dibrugarh, April 23: The 6th Assam State Equestrian Championships commenced on Wednesday at the Borbari Equestrian Centre in Dibrugarh, bringing together riders from across the state for a three-day competition aimed at strengthening the sport and preparing athletes for future national events.
Organised by the Equestrian Federation of Assam, the championships will run until April 25 and are designed to provide riders with valuable competitive exposure while also helping identify and nurture emerging talent in equestrian sports.
The event has attracted major contingents from across Assam, including teams representing Assam Police, the 47 R&V Squadron of the NCC, along with several senior individual riders.
Competitions across the three days include jumping, dressage and tent pegging, showcasing both skill and discipline in the sport.
Federation president SK Barua said the championship will play a key role in scouting and preparing riders for the 2027 National Games, which are scheduled to be hosted in Shillong.
He noted that the event serves as an important stepping stone for athletes aiming to represent the state on a bigger platform.
Barua also highlighted the encouraging rise in participation among sub-junior and junior riders in recent years, adding that the federation is planning to organise a separate state-level championship for younger categories later this year to further develop grassroots talent.
Since its formation, the federation has been instrumental in promoting equestrian sports in Assam and the Northeast, successfully hosting several national and international competitions and expanding the sport’s reach in the region.
With the 2027 National Games in Shillong on the horizon, the championship assumes even greater significance as Assam looks to build a strong pool of riders capable of competing at the highest level.
Beyond medals and trophies, the event reflects the growing ambition of the state to establish itself as a key centre for equestrian sports in the Northeast.
The increasing participation of young riders, coupled with structured efforts by the federation to strengthen training and competition opportunities, signals a promising future for the discipline.
As the riders compete over the next two days, the meet is expected not only to crown champions but also to shape the next generation of equestrian talent who could go on to represent Assam with distinction on the national stage.
