SHILLONG, April 23: The employees of Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL), under the banner of the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Employees Union (MCCEU), have reminded the state government to release the pending third instalment of financial assistance, stating that the delay continues to affect their livelihoods.
MCCEU president Pynskhem Lyngdoh on Thursday said the demand follows a meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on April 9, during which they were assured that the matter would be expedited.
He said the union has also appealed to elected representatives from Sohra and Shella constituencies to take up the issue with urgency. Lyngdoh said the timely release of the third instalment would provide much-needed relief to workers, particularly those who have attempted to rebuild their livelihoods after the cement plant’s closure.
“Nearly 99% of the affected workers have started small ventures such as homestays, restaurants, shops, and other businesses using the earlier instalments.
The release of the remaining amount will help them stabilise and expand these initiatives, generating employment and supporting the local economy,” he said.
The MCCEU pointed out that several retired employees are still awaiting their dues, urging the government to clear the pending payments so they can move forward with financial security.
Lyngdoh said while the union prefers dialogue, it cannot prevent workers from taking to the streets if their demands remain unaddressed. “If there is no positive indication from the government, workers may be compelled to intensify their agitation to secure what is rightfully theirs,” he warned.
Another MCCL employee highlighted the hardships faced by employees due to the delay, noting that many families depend on the financial assistance for daily expenses and sustaining their livelihoods.
The MCCEU stated that a general meeting will soon be convened to deliberate on the next course of action.
While reiterating its preference for a peaceful resolution, it also cautioned that the government’s failure to act could lead to renewed protests by the workers.
