SHILLONG, April 24: A wave of panic swept through parts of Shillong early Friday morning after an unattended bag discovered outside a shop near Laban Police Station sparked fears of a possible explosive threat.
Security agencies responded swiftly, with police and a dog squad rushing to the scene and sealing off the area as a precaution. Movement was temporarily halted while the suspicious bag was subjected to thorough checks, heightening anxiety among residents in the vicinity.
The tension, however, eased after authorities confirmed that the bag contained only clothes and a set of keys, ruling out any danger.
Secretary of Dorbar Shnong Laban, Raja Lyngdoh Nongpyiur, said the bag was first spotted around 7 am by a resident who had gone to dispose of garbage and immediately informed the police. He noted that although the contents were later verified, the identity of the owner and how the bag came to be left there remain unclear.
Chayan Dey, the shop owner in front of whose premises the bag was found, said the incident caused considerable alarm before officials secured the situation.
