SHILLONG, April 24: Facing backlash over VPP supremo Ardent M. Basaiawmoit’s recent remark that the Umiam Luxury Resort & Spa project would turn Shillong into a “sex city”, the party on Friday went into damage control mode, asserting that the statement was not about labelling or branding Shillong as a “sex city” as alleged, but about issuing a timely and responsible warning.
Taking serious note of the criticism by MPCC chief Vincent H. Pala, VPP spokesperson A.W. Rani said, “The VPP wishes to clarify its position in the interest of truth, public accountability, and the protection of Meghalaya’s land, environment, and social fabric.”
Reiterating that the statements made by the VPP president was a responsible warning, Rani said, “There is a growing concern regarding the rise of sex workers and related activities in the city, and it would be negligent to ignore or undermine the risks associated with such developments, particularly where certain hotels and spa establishments may become linked, directly or indirectly, to these concerns.”
Raising these issues is an act of preventive governance, not an attempt to damage the image of Shillong, he added.
He further said, “The matter at hand is not about the name of any hotel or company, but about transparency, regulatory oversight, and the long-term environmental and social impact of the proposed project on Lumpongdeng Island.”
Making it clear that the VPP supports investment and tourism, Rani firmly maintained that development must be responsible, accountable, and aligned with the values, well-being, and environmental interests of the people.
“Protecting Shillong’s image requires acknowledging emerging challenges and addressing them with seriousness, rather than dismissing legitimate concerns raised in the public interest,” he added.
