250 farmers attend horti skill prog in WJH village

SHILLONG, April 25: The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Center (DDUCC), Wahiajer, a constituent college of NEHU, organised a capacity-building programme on Friday for 250 farmers from Laskein Block.
According to a statement here, the event titled ‘Skill Enhancement for Horticultural Development and Sustainability’ was held in collaboration with ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.
Agronomy specialist Risakaru Lyngdoh from KVK Wahiajer, who led the technical session, shared knowledge on modern horticultural techniques designed to improve yields and promote community wellness.
Speaking at the valedictory function, Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh urged farmers to apply their new skills to build sustainable livelihoods.
He encouraged the participants to transition toward entrepreneurship to help address local employment issues.
On the other hand, NEHU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. S. Umdor stressed the importance of agriculture to the regional economy and advised farmers to utilise government schemes and subsidies to expand their operations.
He assured continued support from the university for similar outreach initiatives.
The programme concluded with the distribution of horticultural inputs and seedlings to the participants, most of whom were women.
The event was also attended by MDC Wormanship Shadap, DDUCC principal Dr. FR Sumer and former principal Prof. H. Lamin.
