SHILLONG, April 25: Questions are mounting over the mysterious disappearance of a 27-year-old Guwahati teacher who was recovered from inside a Shillong bank on Saturday, three days after she sent a frantic SOS to her family claiming she was in danger.
Bhabana Sarma, who had recently resigned from her position at a private school in Guwahati, was discovered in a distressed condition by staff at the State Bank of India branch near Polo Ground when they arrived for work on Saturday morning.
The recovery ends a three-day search that began on April 24. Sarma had left her residence that morning, telling her family she intended to collect pending dues from her former school. Investigators found that she initially booked an Uber ride, which was later cancelled, before she used a Rapido service to travel toward Paltan Bazar.
The case took a dark turn later that day when Sarma allegedly sent a message to her family stating she was in danger while travelling between Tetelia and Azara.
Her mobile location was last traced near Gauhati University before the device became unreachable.
Police officials from Guwahati have arrived in Shillong to escort her home. While her condition is reported as stable, the discovery has raised significant security concerns regarding how she managed to enter and remain inside the bank premises undetected.
Shillong police are currently working with their Guwahati counterparts to reconstruct her movements and determine the circumstances of her transit from Assam to Meghalaya. Her family is also en route to the city to assist with the inquiry.
