SHILLONG, April 26: Despite inclement weather, members of Seng Khasi and Sein Raij Niamtre, Shillong, conducted their annual cleanliness drive at the Jaiaw cremation ground on Sunday.
Organised by the Lum Jingthang Committee under Seng Khasi Kmie, the initiative saw members of both organisations work together to maintain the sanctity of the sacred site.
Sein Raij Niamtre president Iarless Pde attended as the chief guest, alongside Seng Khasi Kmie president O Pyngrope and General Secretary Hainess Marbaniang.
Members of the Jylli Pyrkhat Kam (JPK), Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla, and various well-wishers also participated in the drive.
The programme commenced with the hoisting of the Seng Khasi flag by O Pyngrope, followed by a traditional prayer led by Lum Jingthang Committee senior member Skor Jala.
Addressing the gathering, Sein Raij Niamtre president Pde commended the Lum Jingthang Committee for its upkeep of the site. He spoke on the significance of nature as a nurturing force that sustains human life and expressed satisfaction with the well-maintained surroundings of the cremation ground.
Pde noted that such annual events strengthen the unity between Seng Khasi and Sein Raij Niamtre. He highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the two bodies, particularly during traditional festivals like Behdeihkhlam in Jowai, which fosters cultural vibrancy.
Following the formal proceedings, participants—including elders, youth, and children—joined in the collective cleaning of the premises.
The event was moderated by committee member JSR Syiemlieh, who also delivered the vote of thanks.
