SHILLONG, April 26: The Meghalaya BJP on Sunday cautioned the public against what it termed attempts to exploit sensitive issues for political mileage, accusing the Voice of the People Party (VPP) of resorting to “agitation politics” regarding the Taj resort and the Lumpongdeng Island controversy.
State BJP general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna said the VPP had unnecessarily “hijacked” the issue and turned it into a political spectacle. He described remarks made against the hospitality sector as derogatory and uncalled for.
Pohshna further stated that the VPP’s threats of mass mobilisation and plans to encircle the Secretariat are diversionary tactics intended to conceal the party’s failure to deliver tangible change on the issues it champions.
The VPP recently escalated the Lumpongdeng island matter, holding a mass gathering at Motphran on April 22. During the rally, the party urged citizens to prepare for a march to the Secretariat to pressure the MDA 2.0 government into addressing its eight-point charter of demands.
Maintaining that land-related matters fall under the jurisdiction of District Councils, Pohshna pointed out that despite being in power in the KHADC for over a year, the VPP has not introduced any laws to safeguard the rights of landless Khasi people. Instead, he said, the party has relied on protests.
He added that the VPP should support government initiatives aimed at generating employment for local youth rather than misleading the public. Pohshna reaffirmed that the BJP remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of indigenous communities while ensuring governance focused on development, transparency, and accountability.
