SHILLONG, April 27: VPP MDC from Langkyrdem-Laitkroh, Shemborlang Rynjah, has written to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari seeking a comprehensive and independent road safety audit of the entire Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki stretch.
In a letter to the Union Minister, Rynjah said the ongoing road widening works have led to an increase in accidents, raising serious concerns over safety during construction.
He urged the ministry to order an independent audit of the entire Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road to assess risks and ensure adherence to safety norms.
Rynjah said the audit is necessary to evaluate hazards along the road connecting Shillong to Dawki.
He highlighted recurring incidents along the stretch, including recent reports of two persons being killed after a landslide and falling rocks struck a vehicle.
“More importantly, since 2023, at least 10 lives have been lost in accidents along this stretch due to landslides and falling rocks,” he said.
The MDC also alleged violations of safety norms under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and guidelines of the Indian Road Congress.
