WASHINGTON, April 28: King Charles III is visiting the United States on a diplomatic trip aimed at reinforcing UK–US relations during a period of political strain.
On Tuesday, he will become the first British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 to address the US Congress, where he is expected to emphasize shared history, democratic values, and the enduring strength of the transatlantic alliance.
The visit includes a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, followed by a state banquet hosted in his honour.
Queen Camilla is accompanying him on the four-day tour, which also marks preparations for the 250th anniversary of US independence from Britain.
The trip comes amid growing tensions in US–UK relations, with Trump imposing tariffs on British goods and criticising Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
His broader foreign policy approach, including pressure on NATO allies and trade disputes, has further strained ties.
Despite these issues, the visit is expected to remain largely ceremonial, reflecting the British monarchy’s apolitical role and Trump’s well-known admiration for the royal family.
It also follows recent parliamentary exchanges between the two countries aimed at maintaining diplomatic engagement.
Some US lawmakers have urged King Charles to address issues linked to Jeffrey Epstein during his visit, but no such engagement is planned.
After Washington, he and Queen Camilla will continue their US tour with stops in New York and Virginia. (AP)
