SHILLONG, April 28: The alignment for the proposed four-lane high-speed corridor from Ri-Bhoi till Assam is nearing completion.
Informing this on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the NHIDCL has already invited tenders for package 1 and 2 of the project.
“The alignment is more or less finalised in Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills. We are having discussion on the alignment in East Jaintia Hills,” he said.
Asked why the government is going for a four-lane and not a six-lane expressway, he said that the Northeast region is hilly and a six-lane expressway is not possible in many areas.
Referring to the Shillong-Dawki road project where the expansion work is going on in selected areas only, he attributed it to the difficult topography of the region.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs last year had approved the proposal for Development, Maintenance and Management of a 4-lane Greenfield Access Controlled 166.80 km of National Highway No. 06 from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam on Hybrid Annuity Mode as an access controlled greenfield High-Speed Corridor at a total capital cost of Rs 22,864 crore. A total of 144.80 km of the project length lies in Meghalaya while only 22.00 km lies in Assam.
