SHILLONG, April 29: The NPP-led MDA government on Wednesday criticised the Voice of the People Party for resorting to street protests, asserting that elected representatives must utilise the Assembly to raise public issues instead of mobilising people outside.
Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said the government derives its authority from the mandate of the people, which has given it a five-year term to govern under the Constitution.
He stated that it was unfortunate that those entrusted with a legislative platform were choosing to act like pressure groups, adding that such actions undermine the purpose of democratic institutions.
Shylla expressed concern over statements calling for gherao of the Secretariat, describing them as disturbing and indicative of a mindset that should not be encouraged in a constitutional system.
He pointed out that adopting such an approach would set a precedent where any political group out of power could take to the streets whenever it disagrees with the government.
Stressing responsibility, he said elected representatives are expected to demonstrate governance and uphold the trust reposed in them by the people, rather than engage in agitation.
He further remarked that attempts to mobilise a section of the population should not override the will of the larger public, and called for a more mature and responsible approach in political discourse.
Shylla expressed hope that statements in the coming days would reflect greater restraint and maturity.
