SHILLONG, May 1: Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) president, DRL Nonglait, on Friday issued a clarification regarding his earlier statement describing Pnar as a variety under the Khasi language, acknowledging that the remark may not have adequately reflected the linguistic and cultural identity of the Pnar community.
In a statement, Nonglait said that upon reflection, he recognises that language identity is a deeply rooted and sensitive matter.
He noted that linguistic varieties spoken across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills can, over time, evolve into distinct and independent languages.
“I hold the Pnar language and its speakers in the highest regard and respect their position that Pnar is a separate language with its own rich heritage and identity,” Nonglait stated, adding that his earlier remark was not intended to undermine or diminish the identity of the community.
Expressing regret over any misunderstanding or hurt caused, the KAS president reaffirmed his commitment to promoting mutual respect, inclusivity, and constructive dialogue among different linguistic communities.
