Colombian superstar Shakira performed a massive free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, drawing an estimated 2 million people, according to city officials.
The show was part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour and followed similar free mega-concerts by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga the previous year.
Shakira’s set began later than scheduled but was met with huge excitement, featuring drone displays and fan favourites like Hips Don’t Lie, La Tortura, and La Bicicleta, ending with her hit BZRP Music Sessions.
She also delivered an emotional message about resilience, particularly for women, and reflected on her long connection with Brazil since first performing there at age 18.
The concert was part of Rio’s strategy to boost tourism and economic activity, with officials estimating major financial returns from visitors and spending.
Thousands of fans travelled from across Brazil and abroad, filling hotels, beaches, and streets ahead of the show.
Fans and experts highlighted Shakira’s deep cultural bond with Brazil and her influence as a symbol of Latin identity, making the event both a cultural celebration and a historic large-scale performance. (AP)
