SHILLONG, May 4: The Conrad K. Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) failed to open its account in the Assam Assembly elections, with both its candidates losing the elections from their respective constituencies by significant margin of votes.
NPP had initially fielded Daniel Langthasa in Haflong, Ganseng B. Sangma in Boko-Chaygaon, and Md. Aminul Islam in Mankachar seats. However, Islam withdrew his candidature at the eleventh hour and joined Congress.
Langthasa lost to the BJP candidate, while Ganseng B. Sangma was ranked third in Boko-Chaygaon constituency after the final round of counting.
In the last Assembly elections in Assam in 2021, the NPP had put up candidates in 11 seats but failed to win a single seat.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated the BJP’s top leadership for its landslide victories in Assam and West Bengal, although he remained mum on the NPP’s poor show in the neighbouring state.
Sangma said the resounding mandate in favour of BJP reflects the people’s trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership and commitment to development, progress, and good governance.
He also congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the BJP’s “outstanding performance”.
