SHILLONG, May 8: Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green on Friday appreciated the constitutional safeguards provided to tribal communities in Meghalaya during a meeting with Governor CH Vijayashankar at Lok Bhavan here.
Accompanied by Australian Consul General Bernard Lynch, the High Commissioner held discussions on higher education, sustainable development, eco-tourism and the expansion of the water sector and water sports in Meghalaya.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor HC Chaudhary was also present during the meeting.
During the interaction, Green also expressed interest in understanding Meghalaya’s unique socio-cultural and constitutional framework aimed at protecting tribal rights and preserving indigenous identity.
Governor Vijayashankar briefed the delegation on Meghalaya’s democratic traditions and the importance of safeguarding customs while pursuing inclusive development.
The meeting also focused on strengthening academic linkages through potential collaborations, student exchange programmes and research partnerships between institutions in Meghalaya and Australia.
Given the state’s natural resources, both sides discussed the potential for adventure tourism and water-based activities such as kayaking and diving.
The Governor also highlighted Meghalaya’s biodiversity and the prospects for research into medicinal plants for wellness and sustainable economic growth.
Earlier, Green attended a programme organised by Asian Confluence in Shillong, which focused on international engagement, regional connectivity, and cultural exchange.
