Agartala: Hitting hard on the Congress led UPA government over corruption, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that the Centre could not evade its responsibility in failing to check scams like 2G spectrum and Commonwealth Games.

“The Manmohan Singh government will have to answer to the people of the country for record-breaking corruption during the recent past”, he said after unfurling the tri-colour flag at Assam Rifles ground here on Monday.

The corruption and sky-rocketing price hike are result of the new economic policy that the UPA government has been persuading since it came to power, he pointed out.

Asserting that much has not changed in the county even after 64 years of freedom, Sarkar alleged that a section of people remained affluent at the sufferings of common people.

“Poverty still remains a major cause of concern for the country even after 64 years of Independence. However, there is lack of will to address the basic problems being faced by the common people”, he said.

Sarkar also reiterated his appeal to the insurgents to shun the path of violence and join mainstream to create a developed state.

Sarkar said though insurgency could be contained up to a certain level there is no reason to believe that it was completely crushed. “I appeal to the misguided youths to abjure the path of violence and join normal life and participate to create a developed Tripura”, he said.

The ultras were still using the soil of neighbouring Bangladesh, cutting the barbed wire fencing to enter into Indian territory and kidnapping people for ransom, he added.

Chief Minister said, Tripura was a backward state but it was showing the sign of development in many sectors like agriculture, fisheries, horticulture and education. He appealed to all section of people irrespective of politics, cast and creed to play their positive role for advancement and development of the state.
