SHILLONG, May 12: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has objected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat’s recent appointment of retired officials on an honorary basis, citing the negative impact on the state’s unemployed youth.
The council specifically challenged the re-engagement of retired personnel as Adviser (Rules Committee) and Senior Nazir, as outlined in office orders dated March 26 and May 5. The HYC argued that this practice overlooks thousands of qualified, educated youths struggling to find employment.
“Such appointments send a discouraging message to the youth of the state. While many qualified young people are waiting for fair opportunities in government institutions, the repeated engagement of retired individuals blocks fresh recruitment, promotion, and institutional growth,” the HYC stated.
The council questioned the necessity of these appointments and whether eligible serving employees or qualified unemployed candidates were properly considered. The HYC has demanded an immediate review of the appointments and a public disclosure of the selection process and justification. The group is also calling for a transparent policy to regulate post-retirement engagements, urging the government to prioritize the recruitment of local youth and the promotion of eligible serving staff.
